Last weekend, when I headed to Tokyo on an errand, I went to a stand-up buckwheat noodle shop, Ichiyoshi, a five-minute walk from the east exit of Nippori Station, for lunch. At first glance, this standing-only buckwheat noodle restaurant looks like it could be found anywhere in downtown Tokyo, but for some reason, it is very popular. It is visited by inbound customers from overseas and has been featured on the Chinese SNS ‘Xiaohongsho’, so when I visited this time, there were three Chinese groups lined up behind me.

When I arrived in front of the restaurant, there was a queue of about 20 people, but when I turned around 10 minutes after arriving, there was a queue of another 20 people. The reason why it is so good is because it is ‘cheap, tasty and fast’. The basics are soba and udon from 210 yen and thick soba noodles from 240 yen, which are quite reasonable prices in Tokyo. However, the toppings are peculiar and the more toppings you ask for, the higher the price. However, all are delicious.

Personally, I recommend the jumbo squid lizardfish tempura (260 yen) and red ginger tempura (130 yen), and if you order this with cold thick soba noodles (390 yen), the price is 780 yen. Well, this is fine with me, because a soba restaurant in the station area would cost nearly 1,000 yen. The restaurant is small, with barely enough space for 10 people to eat standing up. There is also a seat for two people.

The jumbo squid tempura and red ginger tempura are all delicious, and the thick soba noodles have a nice firmness. In fact, the tempura is so good that I want to eat it with rice. I bet it would be even better if you sprinkle salt on it and bite into it.
As with the shoyu ramen, however, my tongue could no longer accept the thick black buckwheat noodle soup. I’m beginning to wonder if my tongue has developed a taste disorder since my last visit.
